Beyond the Rate: How Living Benefit Riders Turn Term Life Into More Than a Commodity

Seth Legatowicz

I'll be straight with you: term life insurance rates right now are as competitive as I've ever seen. A healthy 35-year-old can get a $500,000, 20-year term policy for somewhere in the ballpark of $30-40 a month with any number of top-rated carriers. The pricing is tight, and when rates are that close, term life can start to feel like a commodity — you pick the cheapest quote and move on.

But here's what I tell my clients: when the base rates are almost identical, choose the policy by what's built into it.

The biggest differentiator right now is the Living Benefit Rider — an optional (and often included) provision that lets you access a portion of your death benefit early if you're diagnosed with a chronic, critical, or terminal illness. It transforms a policy that only helps your beneficiaries into one that can help *you* when you need it most.

What a Living Benefit Rider Does

A standard term life policy pays your beneficiaries when you pass away. A Living Benefit Rider expands that: if you're diagnosed with a qualifying condition while you're alive, you can access a portion of the death benefit early — typically up to 50-75% — to cover medical bills, home modifications, lost income, or any other expense.

The best part? On most policies, the rider is included at no additional premium or a minimal cost. You're getting this extra layer of protection for pennies on the dollar.

Let's look at the carriers that offer the best living benefit riders on their term policies — ranked by the breadth of what's included at no extra cost.

Elite Tier — Broadest Coverage at No Extra Cost

National Life Group (LSW) — With Critical Injury Rider

National Life Group stands alone as the only major carrier that includes a separate Critical Injury Rider on top of the standard chronic, critical, and terminal illness triggers. That means your term policy covers not just illness but accidental injuries like severe burns, traumatic brain injury, or loss of limbs. This is the deepest living benefit rider set available on a term policy today — all included at no additional premium. *Overall value: Elite.*

Foresters — Plus Member Benefits

Foresters includes chronic, critical, and terminal illness accelerated benefits at no extra cost — and on top of that, you get member benefits like scholarships, grants, and community programs. For middle-income families who want both strong living benefits and added value beyond the policy itself, Foresters is an excellent choice. *Overall value: Elite.*

Mutual of Omaha — Term Life Express

Mutual of Omaha includes chronic, critical, and terminal illness accelerated benefits on their Term Life Express product — all at no additional premium. It's a household name with strong financial ratings, and their ABR structure is as robust as anything in the market. *Overall value: Elite.*

Strong Tier — Full Chronic + Critical + Terminal, Included

North American Company (ADDvantage Term)

North American Company (a Sammons Financial Group member) offers their Living Benefits Rider with chronic, critical, and terminal illness triggers at no additional premium. Their critical illness trigger covers 17 qualifying conditions including heart attack, stroke, invasive cancer, end-stage renal failure, and major organ transplant. Competitive caps and a solid choice when you already like North American for their term underwriting. *Overall value: Strong.*

Transamerica (LB Term / Trendsetter LB)

Transamerica's Living Benefit Rider on their LB Term and Trendsetter LB products includes chronic, critical, and terminal illness triggers with broad coverage — 11 qualifying conditions for critical illness. Their Trendsetter base rates are some of the most competitive in the industry, and adding the living benefit rider keeps those rates highly competitive while adding real protection. You get commodity pricing *plus* non-commodity features. *Overall value: Strong.*

Corebridge / AIG (QoL Term)

Corebridge Financial (formerly AIG) built their QoL (Quality of Life) Term product specifically around living benefits. Chronic, critical, and terminal illness triggers are all included at no additional cost, with flexible acceleration structures. Their QoL line is a strong contender if you want a product purpose-built for this space. *Overall value: Strong.*

Nationwide (Guaranteed Term)

Nationwide's Guaranteed Term product includes chronic, critical, and terminal illness accelerated benefits at no additional premium. Backed by one of the most recognizable brands in financial services with strong customer experience ratings. *Overall value: Strong.*

Foresters YourTerm

Foresters YourTerm product also includes chronic, critical, and terminal illness ABRs at no additional cost — frequently highlighted in agent guides as a top pick for living-benefit-driven term sales. *Overall value: Strong.*

Moderate Tier — Terminal ABR Included; Chronic/Critical Varies

These carriers include a terminal illness accelerated death benefit at no extra cost — which is valuable — but chronic and critical illness triggers are either limited to specific products, available as additional-cost riders, or not included on their standard term policies:

Banner Life — Accelerated death benefit for terminal illness included on term. Great pricing and underwriting, but chronic/critical are narrower on the base product. (Moderate)

Pacific Life (PL Promise Term) — Terminal ABR included; chronic and critical illness coverage generally not available on their PL Promise term product. (Moderate)

Prudential (Term Essential) — Their Living Needs Benefit for terminal illness is included and well-regarded, but chronic and critical triggers typically require separate products or riders. (Moderate)

Protective — Terminal ABR included on many term policies; chronic illness on select policies. Good overall rider menu, but not as broad as the Elite or Strong tiers. (Moderate)

Columbus Life — Terminal ABR standard on term. Strong in the IUL space, but term living benefits are typically focused on terminal illness. (Niche)

The Bottom Line

When you're shopping for term life insurance, don't just compare the monthly premium and stop there. At today's competitive rates, the differences between carriers won't show up in the price — they'll show up in what the policy does for you while you're still living.

A Living Benefit Rider takes a simple term life policy from something that only helps your family after you're gone, to something that can help *you* through the toughest moments of your life.
